It’s Time to Treat the Causes of Your Dry Mouth

If you have a dry mouth, it’s time to do something about it. Dry mouth is a health issue that can result in serious dental problems. It’s also known as xerostomia and it involves a decrease in saliva production. This is dangerous for your smile because saliva frequently washes bacteria and other harmful substances away from the mouth. So, without it, there is a chance your smile could suffer cavities and other problems.

The causes of dry mouth include lifestyle choices, natural changes to your body, and health issues. When it comes to lifestyle changes, that typically include not drinking the proper amount of water, exercising intensively, using tobacco, drinking alcohol, and using illegal drugs. When it comes to natural changes to your body, that typically includes hormonal changes and age. When it comes to health issues, that typically involves asthma, type 2 diabetes, and eating disorders. It’s also common for dry mouth to be a side effect of some prescription medications.

There are different ways you can relieve your dry mouth. First, you can drink more water. You can do this by keeping a water bottle with you throughout the day or frequently visiting the drinking fountain. Second, brush twice a day and floss once a day. This can protect your teeth and also moisten your mouth. Third, eat regular meals. This can help you produce saliva because chewing triggers the glands. Fourth, avoid overly salty foods. This is recommended because salt pulls water from your mouth, making it drier. Fifth, use artificial saliva to make your mouth moist.
