Enjoy Mother's Day with a Healthy Smile

This month, we take time to recognize and celebrate mothers for all their love, care, and dedication — and that includes teaching us important habits like brushing and flossing. As a mother, your oral health matters not just for your own well-being, but also for your ability to care for your family. This Mother’s Day, let it serve as a reminder that your smile is just as important as everyone else’s. Now is a great time to focus on your dental care needs.

Women face unique oral health challenges that require consistent care and attention, both at home and with regular visits to the dentist. These include:

Menstrual Cycle: Hormonal fluctuations during your cycle can lead to red, swollen, or bleeding gums, as well as canker sores and cold sores.

Hormonal Birth Control: Birth control methods such as pills, injections, IUDs, or vaginal rings can raise estrogen and progesterone levels, which may cause gum sensitivity and redness. Hormonal changes can also impact blood clotting, so it's important to inform your dentist about any medications you're taking — especially if you're planning a dental procedure like a tooth extraction.

Pregnancy Gingivitis: Whether you're expecting your first child or adding to your growing family, pregnancy is a time to be extra mindful of your oral health. Hormonal changes can increase plaque buildup and cause gum inflammation, tenderness, and bleeding — a condition known as pregnancy gingivitis.

Menopause: The drop in estrogen levels during menopause can lead to several oral health issues, including a burning sensation in the mouth, dry mouth due to reduced saliva flow, and a higher risk of osteoporosis — which can, in turn, contribute to gum disease.

To protect your oral health through all of life’s stages, be sure to:

  • Brush your teeth for two minutes, twice a day
  • Floss daily to remove plaque and food debris
  • Limit sugary snacks and drinks
  • Visit your dentist every six months for a checkup and cleaning — or more often if you're pregnant or noticing any issues

This month, as we celebrate the amazing mothers and grandmothers in our lives, let’s also encourage them to prioritize their own self-care — especially their dental health. If you or a loved one is due for a checkup, we invite you to contact our dental office and schedule a consultation. Our team is here to support your healthiest, happiest smile!
