Finding Sources of Fluoride

Fluoride is a mineral that plays an important role in dental health by strengthening tooth enamel. It helps teeth become more resistant to acid attacks caused by bacteria in the mouth. Fluoride not only helps prevent tooth decay, but it can also reverse early signs of it.

So, where can you find fluoride? Fluoride occurs naturally in many sources and is also added to certain products to promote better dental health.

Water

Fluoride is naturally found in most water sources, including rivers, lakes, wells, and oceans. For over 70 years, fluoride has been added to public water supplies to enhance its protective benefits. Before fluoridation, children developed nearly three times as many cavities. Today, about 75 percent of the U.S. population uses fluoridated water systems.

Mouthwash

Many types of mouthwash contain fluoride, which helps make your teeth more resistant to decay. Children under seven should not use fluoride mouthwash unless advised by a dentist, as they may accidentally swallow it.

Fluoride Supplement

Fluoride supplements are available only by prescription and come in tablet, drop, and lozenge forms. Dr. Matthew Scaffa may recommend supplements for children aged six months to sixteen years who live in areas without sufficient fluoride in the water supply.

Toothpaste

Using fluoride toothpaste is an effective way to help prevent cavities. Look for toothpaste with the ADA Seal of Acceptance to ensure it contains fluoride. Brush your teeth at least twice a day for the best results.
